SVG VIEWING TUTORIAL

COMMENT ON AND DISCUSS THIS PAGE

Before getting to the action, it might be an idea to learn how to view SVG files.

IMPORTANT

This is probably the first comic you've ever seen in SVG. If you can't see the Dragon Knights logo at the top left hand corner, the archive icon at the top right and a big picture of people standing around a pool in a courtyard above this paragraph, you need to install an SVG viewer or change to a browse with native SVG support (you'll miss the best bits of this site - i.e. the actual comics - without one). PixelPalaces - VIEWING SVG FILESis a fairly up to date list of your options. Most the text is in the font Comic Sans MS so it should look better if this is installed on your computer (other fonts are either common or included in the SVG files). In the future SVG viewers will be able to use an SVG versions of fonts from the Dragon Knights web site.

For more about SVG and why I think it's a good format for comics see the SVG page.

VISUALLY IMPAIRED?

To improve accessibility, the comic SVGZ files contain <desc> elements (SVG is a form of XML) which describe the pictures. The dialouge (and some other things) are in <text> elements (which often contain <tspan> and sometimes <textpath> elements). Let us know if you find this useful or if this feature can be improved.

INTERACTIVE FEATURES

Unlike jpg and gif, SVG has some built-in interactive freatures, most notably the ability to pan and zoom.

Here's a picture of African dessert below (due to the ice age, many of the indigenous plants are dying and hardier introduced species are taking over).

Right click on the above SVG. You will see a menu which includes "Zoom In", "Zoom Out" and "Original View". If you click on "Zoom In" the picture will get bigger. If you click on "Zoom Out" the picture will get smaller. If you click on "Original View" it will go back to it's original size and possition (this is usefull if you get lost). If you hold down the Alt key, your pointer should turn into a hand. If you drag with the mouse the picture will move (this is why SVG's don't normally have scroll bars). (This works with the Adobe SVG viewer but not with some browsers.) Try zooming and panning! There's a strange absence of wildlife, can you find what's frightening it? When you move your pointer over it, it will turn into a pointing hand. This means that there is a link. If you left click you will see notes from the mod database (unfortunately this doesn't work with Internet Explorer 7).

Orientation - continue with explanation of this comic's interactive features (need SVG support).
