PixelPalaces - VIEWING SVG FILES

Contents page

This page was writen in September 2006 and was last revised in August 2011. All information is either taken from the official websites of the software in question or is from experimentation by PixelPalaces (unless otherwise stated all experiments were conducted on a Pentium 4 with Windows XP). If you think the information here is out of date or inacurate or you know of other software you think should be covered, let me know!

Background

SVG is a non-propriatory vector graphics format with optional interactivity and animation. In other words it's a way of doing pictures on computers which is very useful for a lot of things but so far very under used. Internet Explorer (and until recently most other browsers) doesn't suport it without a plug-in. To date, the best and probably most widely used way of viewing SVG files has been with the Adobe SVG viewer version 3 plug-in (although Opera is now about as good).

Plug-in3Very good but lacked some features such as forien-object. Installing in browsers other than Internet Explorer can be problematic. Adobe are no longer developing it and it's uncertain how long it will available for.
AmayaBrowser10Can display svg code included in (x)html pages but as most browsers can't this is seldom done yet. Supports SMIL animation but not JavaScript (diametrically opposite to Firefox and Renesis). You have to right click on links and choose to open them from a menu. As most the SVG's on this site are pretty useless without JavaScript, this isn't a lot of use for viewing PixelPalaces SVG's.
Corel SVG viewerPlug-inSimilar but not identical capabilities to the Adobe viewer. Corel seem to have lost interest in SVG so the future availablity and support of this product is in question.
Google ChromeBrowserChrome 13

This is based on Webkit (like Safari) and should have similar capabilities. Hot zones are invisible but receive events. Some filters work. Filters that combine turbulance with the source graphic (many of these) don't seem to incorporate the source graphic (may be more complicated than this). Some SMIL animations triger warnings and don't work. Javascript and SMIL don't seem to work if they're trigured by the beginning or end of an SMIL animation. Can be zoomed by Ctrl+Mousewheel at which point scroll bars appear, allowing you to scroll. However it's very slow and eratic so it's problematic with pictures which are larger than the initial view. Can be paned by Shift+drag but this is awkward as you drag up to go down, down to go up, right to go right and left to go left. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to return to the orriginal view, not even re-loading.

Orientation
Works really well.

Part V
Seems to interfere with other programs on your computer causing them to run slowly or crash.
  • Frames 9 and 13 - Trista's cheeks and nipples not cropped making them look rectangular. Fill on tree's leave's missing although the filter is visible.
  • Frame 14 - Trista's nipple's not clipped so they look rectangular. Fill missing on tree's leaves.

Part XI
  • Frame 1 - I think the fill is missing from the ground. It isn't terribly obvious but the stars are visible through it in some places.
  • Frame 3 - Parts of Earth transparant (but still have color) and stars visible through them). Upon clicking it, get an SMIL warning. Upon clicking it's OK button, it progresses to Frame 4 with another SMIL warning.
  • Frame 4 - Upon clicking the OK button on the SMIL warning, it progresses to frame 5 with another SMIL warning.
  • Frame 5 - Upon clicking the OK button on the SMIL warning, it progreeses to the navigation page, bypassing frame 6.
  • Frame 6 - Works fine but you only seem able to get it by clicking the number 6 on the nav bar or the back button when on the navigation page.
  • Frame 7 - Dog's body missing (I think there's some bad code here I'll fix when I combine these files). Captain's head transparent.
  • Frame 11 - Animates from the wrong possition (I think runs the animateTransform but not the animateMotion). Fill missing from dog's body, only shading and filter shows.
  • Frame 12 - Dog's body mysteriously become solid (this is what it should look like but why does this frame work and not frame 11?).
End
Works very well but seems rather slow.
Internet ExplorerBrowser7 and 8Needs a plug-in to view SVG. Has trouble with object elements (sometimes used to embed SVG files in (X)HTML pages). However it works perfectly well with iframes and works fairly well (with the Adobe SVG viewer) to view Pixelpalaces. Unfortunately links in SVG files don't work if they have target attributes (which open the new page in a different window or frame). This is a feature I use frequently so it's easy to go back to the SVG file without resetting it. IE also doesn't let SVG files open new windows with JavaScript.
9Only works on Windows Vista and newer. Hasn't been tested. Has native SVG support. From what I've heard, it seems to have similar performance to Google Chrome and Firefox.
Mozilla FirefoxBrowser6

It's difficult finding SVG information on the website - it just claims that this has been improved. Most SMIL works. Filters that require the background graphic don't seem to work and objects with them don't appear. The animated hot zone filter (uses the background graphic) doesn't appear but receives events. Generally fast but does seem to get slow on frames with large areas of filters and the function to close the final bubble seems particularly slow. It has a bizare inability to display local SVGZ files. There doesn't seem to be a way to zoom and pan svg files.

Orientation
Works well apart from things noted elsewhere.
Book 1 title page
The filter in the background dosen't look right at all (it should look like space with stars).
Part I
  • Frame 10 - Text conversation doesn't appear.
  • Frame 15 - sky filter works reasonably well but not the one for the ground.
Part II
  • Frame 12 - repeated SMIL warnings but the animation seems to work. Frame number remains white.
Part III
  • Frame 2 (and less noticably on Frame 3) - blur filters clipped awkwardly.
  • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone (the first in the frame) doesn't work.

  • Frame 24 - Question mark on News graphic too small.
  • Frame 25 - Blur filter on breast doesn't work.
  • Frame 32 - Stag's face is cut off just below the mouth. Letters on molecule too small (both external SVGZ files referenced with image). Satalite doesn't appear. User icon doesn't appear (external SVGZ file referenced with image).
  • Frame 33 - As frame 32 except Buchannon possitioned incorrectly (image referencing SVGZ file).

  • Frame 7 - Dog's body missing (I think this is a problem with my code).
  • End
    Very good
OperaBrowser11 and 11.01Unfortunately has a bug related to JavaScript and the display attribute (requirers changing the display attribute of a container object and one or more of it's descendents). Don't worry if you don't know what that means. The problem is that this bug prevents most frames in this comic from appearing although their bubbles do (most hotzones are renedered and accept events but are invisible against a white background). This bug seems to get overriden by other javascript and SMIL, so ironically more complicated things tend to appear while simpler things don't. This bug is so problematic that it makes a good investigation of the features of this version difficult. The bug has been reported to the Opera development team.
    11.50

Generally very good and have fixed the bug that caused serious problems with version 11 and 11.01. Most problems seem related to text, particularly when fancy. Can zoom with right click menu but the viewBox is zoomed as well and anything outside isn't shown. Can be panned with Ctrl drag but this very slow and clunky.

    Orientation

Renesis (last time I checked, this didn't work)Standalone, Internet Explorer plug-in and Windows Explorer plug-in1.1

Reasonable performance but still lacks SMIL and filters and a few text elements seem to be the wrong size. Animated hot zone filter appears as black shapes. Opens links with target attributes in the same window. The Standalone can't handle links to non-SVG files. Does display SVG's in image elements but doesn't get the dimentions right. The Windows Explorer plug-in produces thumbnails of SVG(Z) files in Windows Explorer.

I haven't tested the plug-in as there doesn't seem to be an easy way to switch back and fourth between it and the Adobe plug-in.

The Company developing this is having problems so it's future is looking uncertain particularly as the anouncement that IE 9 will have SVG support suggests that it will quickly become obsolete.

    Part I
    • Frame 1 - hot zone does not appear. Rolling over it results in warning that "Operation not supported by implimentation." Does not dissapear when you move on to other frames.
    • Frame 10 - Stag's vision of a warewolf appears but doesn't fade in and out.
    • Navigation page - only half of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part II

    • Navigation page - only half of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part III
    • Frame 5 - need nav bar to move to next frame.
    • Frame 7 - hot zones displased slightly but their clipPaths aren't.
    • Frame 8 - Buchannon's hot zone displaced, but not it's clipPath.
    • Frame 9 - Stag's hot zone doesn't appear but it receives events.
    • Frame 11 - Tiffy doesn't appear but her hot zone does.
    • Frame 16 - mouseout doesn't work on Tiffy's hot zone.
    • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone (first one in frame) doesn't appear or receive events.
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part IV
    • Frame 18 - Tiffy's not zone doesn't appear but accepts events.
    • Frame 25 - Only hot zone appears (the rest, apart from the bubble, is an image referencing an SVGZ file) and doesn't accept events. Displaying this frame seems to crash the viewer so it refuses to do anything else except closing down.
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part V
    • Frame 3 - Only hot zone appears and then the viewer refuses to do anything else except shutting down.
    • Frame 20 - Only half of Tiffy's hair appears and her right arm isn't visible. The navbar doesn't appear.
    • Frame 32 - Only parts of Stag appear (he's in an SVGZ file refeferenced by an image). The lines of the space ship diagram are very narrow and hard to see.
    • Frame 33 - Refuses to do anything except close down.
    • Frame 34 - Guest icon partly missing.
    • Navigation page - only part of "Archives" icon appears.
    Part VI

    • Frame 30 - clicking just gives an SMIL warning instead of advancing to the next frame (you an use the nav bar).
    • Frame 31-32 - clicking doesn't do anything (can use nav bar).
    • Frame 34-36, 38, 40, 42, 44 - Trista's nighty has mysteriously turned magenta.
    SafariBrowser5.1

Based on Web Kit so should be very similar to Google Chrome. However Chrome now seems more ambitious. The animated filter appears black. Doesn't seem to support SVG fonts (so writing in fancy fonts tends not to appear). Going to another page from an SVG and then going back doesn't restart the SVG but returns to the state where you left it (useful). Filters don't seem to work. Some fonts displayed larger than in other viewers. onend events in SMIL don't seem to work. Can work slowly and slow down other applications when viewing large SVG files. Zoomed by Ctrl+mousewheel but if you zoom out, only the contents of the original viewBox is maintained. Pans by Shitf + drag but the up and down is reversed (drag left to go left, right to go right, up to go down and down to go up) which is confusing. Doesn't seem to have an "original view" function and even when you go on to another file, the pan and zoom is maintained.

    Orientation
    Works very well.
    Book 1 title page
    Works quiet well.
    Part I

    • Frame 11 - Tiffy doesn't appear (but her hot zone does and receives events).
    • Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone doesn't appear or receive events. This is the first hot zone in the frame so it's unlcear if the others work.
    Part IV
    • Frame 18 - Tiffy's hot zone doesn't appear but accepts events.
    • Frame 21 - Tiffy's hot zone doesn't appear but accepts events.

    • Frame 33 - Buchannon's (an image referencing an SVGZ file) picture too small (his hot zone is the correct size).
    Part VI

    • Frame 9 - Doesn't advance to next frame after animation.
    • Frame 11 - Zooms from wrong location, probably because the animateTransform is executed but not the animateMotion which should run at the same time. Doesn't advance to the next frame after the animation.

    Good
Squigle - comes with BatikStandalone1.7Comes with the Batik Java toolkit. Has serious problems with most SVG files on this site, and seems to have a problem with a JavaScript function used in most files. Does support SMIL. Being a standalone, it can't handle links to non-SVG files or SVG files designed to be viewed on (X)HTML pages. Has an interesting feature of displaying the contents of desc elements.
