SVG is a non-propriatory vector graphics format with optional interactivity and animation. In other words it's a way of doing pictures on computers which is very useful for a lot of things but so far very under used. Internet Explorer (and until recently most other browsers) doesn't suport it without a plug-in. To date, the best and probably most widely used way of viewing SVG files has been with the Adobe SVG viewer version 3 plug-in (although Opera is now about as good). Unfotunately this still lacks some useful features and instalation is problematic for any browser except Internet Explorer. Adobe are discontinuing it. This means that it will be necessary to find alternative ways of viewing SVG files. Fortunately an increasing number of browsers have native SVG suport and there is at least one new plug-in. The various options will be discussed here, with links to relevant web-sites.
| Program and web site | Type | Version | Notes |
|---|
Adobe SVG viewer Download page | Plug-in | 3 | Very good but lacked some features such as forien-object. Installing in browsers other than Internet Explorer can be problematic. Adobe are no longer developing it and it's uncertain how long it will available for. |
| Amaya | Browser | 10 | Can display svg code included in (x)html pages but as most browsers can't this is seldom done yet. Supports SMIL animation but not JavaScript (diametrically opposite to Firefox and Renesis). You have to right click on links and choose to open them from a menu. As most the SVG's on this site are pretty useless without JavaScript, this isn't a lot of use for viewing PixelPalaces SVG's. |
| Corel SVG viewer | Plug-in | | Similar but not identical capabilities to the Adobe viewer. Corel seem to have lost interest in SVG so the future availablity and support of this product is in question. |
| Google Chrome | Browser | Chrome 5.0.375.70 | This is based on Webkit (like Safari) and should have similar capabilities. Hot zones are invisible but receive events. Some filters work but objects seem to be invisible if it can't handel their filters. Displays some fonts larger than most other viewers. onend events don't seem to work (so javascript not trigured at the end of SMIL animations). Some SVGZ files don't work in images. Seems to have some issues with use elements. Can be zoomed by Ctrl+Mousewheel at which point scroll bars appear, allowing you to scroll. However it only shows what's inside the original viewBox so it's problematic with picture which are larger than the initial view. Can be paned by Shift+drag but this is awkward as you drag up to down, down to up, right to right and left to go left. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to return to the orriginal view. - Orientation
- Works really well.

| Internet Explorer | Browser | 7 | Needs a plug-in to view SVG. Has trouble with object elements (sometimes used to embed SVG files in (X)HTML pages). However it works perfectly well with iframes and works fairly well (with the Adobe SVG viewer) to view Pixelpalaces. Unfortunately links in SVG files don't work if they have target attributes (which open the new page in a different window or frame). This is a feature I use frequently so it's easy to go back to the SVG file without resetting it. IE also doesn't let SVG files open new windows with JavaScript. |
| Mozilla Firefox | Browser | 3.5 | It's difficult finding SVG information on the website - it just claims that this has been improved. As far as we've been able to determine this does not support SMIL animation. The animated hot zone filter doesn't appears but receives events. It has limited filter support. It has a bizare inability to display local SVGZ files. Doesn't seem to display SVGZ files in image elements but there's no "missing image" icon. Its JavaScript is considerably faster than Opera's. - Orientation
- Works well apart from things noted elsewhere.
- Book 1 title page
- The filter in the background dosen't look right at all (it should look like space with stars).
- Part I
- Frame 1 - Tiffy animation doesn't appear but rolling over Dactura does change to next frame. However this only happens once and then it's impossible to get Frame 1 back.
- Frame 2 - clicking on it doesn' progress to next frame, need to use nav bar. Frame not removed when you change to another frame.
- Frame 6 - get an SMIL warning when started and another if you repeatedly mouse over Esther after her last bubble, she doesn't dissapear.
- Frame 10 - Text conversation doesn't appear. Stag's vision appears but doesn't fade in and fade out.
- Frame 11 - appears with SMIL warning.

- Frame 7 - SMIL warning.
- Frame 12 - SMIL warning.
- Navigation frame - main page and archives icons don't appear but their links work.
- Part III
- Frame 2 (and less noticably on Frame 3) - blur filters clipped awkwardly.
- Frame 5 - SMIL warning. Need to use nav bar to progress to next frame.
- Frame 14 - rather messy because zoom doesn't work. SMIL warning.
- Frame 16 - Sun glases transparent (ghostly - they should be solid black).
- Frame 26 - Tiffy's hot zone (the first in the frame) doesn't work.
- Navigation frame - main page and archives icons don't appear but their links work.
- Part IV
- Fairly good, the SMIL warnings don't prevent you from following the plot.
- Frames 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 21, 22 - SMIL warnings related to the filter on Beartrix, which should be removed when the hot zone filter is applied to her. However it doesn't appear at all.
- Frame - Snakes dissapear when Eugenic is moused over but Beartrix doesn't appear.
- Frame 25 - Blank but hot zone works so the speach bubble appears. The rest is an SVGZ file in an
image.
- Part V
- Frame 3 - nothing appears but mouseover works making speach bubble appear.
- Frame 7 - SMIL warnings.
- Frame 23 - Gaps in the patten on the window.
- Frame 32 - Stag, classroom background and user icon (
image referencing SVGZ file) don't appear but Stag's hot zone receives events. Space ship diagram almost invisible. - Frame 33 - As frame 32 except Buchannon doesn't appear (
image referencing SVGZ file). His hot zone recieves events. - Navigation frame, DK logo and archives icon don't appear but links work.
- Part VI
- Frame 3 - Stag, class background and user icon don't appear (
image elements referencing SVGZ files). Stag's hot zone accepts events but doesn't appear. - Frame 17 - SMIL warning, animated objects don't appear.

- Frame 25 - SMIL warnings.

image referencing SVGZ). - Frame 28 - Stag, classroom details and user icon don't appare (
images referencing SVGZ). Does not progress to next frame when clicked (need to use nav bar. - Frame 29 - As 28 but SMIL animation doesn't work.

image referencing SVGZ) doesn't appear but his hot zone and accepts eventss. - Navigation frame, DK logo and archives icon don't appear but links work.
- Part VII
- Frame 3 - Tiffy's picture doesn't appear.
- Frame 4 - Writing about Conflict Resolution service missing (but its title appears).
- Frames 15 - Stag, classroom details and user icon (
images referencing SVGZ files) don't appear. Fairy's hot zone (first one) doesn't recieve events. - Frames 16-17 - zoom doesn't work (get SMIL warning message). Dactura's hot zone (first one) doesn't receive events).
- Frame 18 - Stag, classroom details, user icon and Buchannon (
images referencing SVGZ files) don't appear. - Frames 26, 28, 30 - zoom doesn't work and get SMIL warnings.
- Frame 32 - Hernandez's picture (
image referencing SVGZ file) doesn't appear. - Frame 34 - Water not visible.
- Navigation frame, DK logo and archives icon don't appear but links work.
- Part VIII
Most hot zones don't appear or receive events. - Frame 15 - Can't zoom or pan.
- Frame 17 - Lake doesn't appear and no flashing line.
- Frame 18 - SMIL animation warning and flashing line doesn't appear.
- Frame 19 - Flashing line doesn't appear.
- Frame 20 - Flashing line doesn't appear.
- Frame 28 - Can't zoom or pan.
- Frame 30 - Clicking on the frame gets an SMIL warning and doesn't advancework pressumably because this activates an animation.
- Frame 31 - SMIL warning. Clicking on frame doesn't advance, pressumably because it's supposed to be part of an animation.
- Frame 32 - SMIL warning. Clicking on frame doesn't advance, pressumably because it's supposed to be part of an animation.
- Frame 54 - No text on user icon.
- Part XI
- Frames 1-2 - Work well considering limitations of this browser.

| Opera | Browser | 10 | Seems to support most SVG features. Even the colour changing filter works! Zoom now works. You can pan by Ctrl drag but it's very slow and eratic. Seems to use a lot of memory, interactivity works slowly and causes other applications to work slowly if used at the same time. Rolling over the last hot zone twice to close it seems slow and unreliable. Seems to have a problem with text that is rotated or on a path. Supossed to support SVG files being used as images but doesn't allways work (e.g. toh6 frame 3 - there should be an SVG image of Stag in the lower left corner, you can see the filter where he should be). Parts of objects which extend beyond the edges of internal SVG elements ARE shown but are not removed when the internal SVG's display is turned to "none" (should make things invisible e.g. toh6 frame 3 the grey filtered shape should be confined to a big rectangle). Opacity sometimes gets set to 1 when filtered which makes some things look wrong (e.g. toh6 frame 4, Stag's left hand dissapears when he's filtered and in frame 22 Trista's nipples are far to prominant when she's filtered). Seems to need more memory than other viewers and can make other programs being used at the same time run slowly. - Orientation

| 9.52 Mac version | Seems to have similar performance to the Windows version. Put's blue rectangles around objects clicked on (at least if they have onlcick attributes). |
| Renesis (last time I checked, this didn't work) | Standalone, Internet Explorer plug-in and Windows Explorer plug-in | 1.1 | Reasonable performance but still lacks SMIL and filters and a few text elements seem to be the wrong size. Animated hot zone filter appears as black shapes. Opens links with target attributes in the same window. The Standalone can't handle links to non-SVG files. Does display SVG's in image elements but doesn't get the dimentions right. The Windows Explorer plug-in produces thumbnails of SVG(Z) files in Windows Explorer. I haven't tested the plug-in as there doesn't seem to be an easy way to switch back and fourth between it and the Adobe plug-in. The Company developing this is having problems so it's future is looking uncertain particularly as the anouncement that IE 9 will have SVG support suggests that it will quickly become obsolete. - Part I
- Frame 1 - hot zone does not appear. Rolling over it results in warning that "Operation not supported by implimentation." Does not dissapear when you move on to other frames.
- Frame 10 - Stag's vision of a warewolf appears but doesn't fade in and out.

- Part IV
- Frame 18 - Tiffy's not zone doesn't appear but accepts events.
- Frame 25 - Only hot zone appears (the rest, apart from the bubble, is an

- Part V
- Frame 3 - Only hot zone appears and then the viewer refuses to do anything else except shutting down.
- Frame 20 - Only half of Tiffy's hair appears and her right arm isn't visible. The navbar doesn't appear.

| Safari | Browser | 4.0.3(531.9.1) | Based on Web Kit so should be very similar to Google Chrome. However Chrome now seems more ambitious. The animated filter appears black. Doesn't seem to support SVG fonts (so writing in fancy fonts tends not to appear). Going to another page from an SVG and then going back doesn't restart the SVG but returns to the state where you left it (useful). Filters don't seem to work. Some fonts displayed larger than in other viewers. onend events in SMIL don't seem to work. Can work slowly and slow down other applications when viewing large SVG files. Zoomed by Ctrl+mousewheel but if you zoom out, only the contents of the original viewBox is maintained. Pans by Shitf + drag but the up and down is reversed (drag left to go left, right to go right, up to go down and down to go up) which is confusing. Doesn't seem to have an "original view" function. - Orientation
- Works very well.

| Squigle - comes with Batik | Standalone | 1.7 | Comes with the Batik Java toolkit. Has serious problems with most SVG files on this site, and seems to have a problem with a JavaScript function used in most files. Does support SMIL. Being a standalone, it can't handle links to non-SVG files or SVG files designed to be viewed on (X)HTML pages. Has an interesting feature of displaying the contents of desc elements. |
